copyright and the local authority

Sorry if this has already been covered but I'm on my way out and havn't got time right now to scrawl thro posts...but I'll have a good read later....

I'm on a stakeholders group locally for an initiative in our local authority. I am a Parent member, volunteer, not waged as are the rest of the group. I have graphic design skills and as we were sending out literature to raise awareness of this forthcoming initiative I offered to design a logo for the stakeholders to use on info etc.......

However the local Council have seen this and wish to adopt it for all things to do with the relevant departments, working around this initiative.
Would I be advised to make to suggest they pay me a one off fee for this design and they take copyright ? I know that Councils have budgets for marketing and although they'll say they are skint if they want to use this logo more widely, surley I am within my rights to charge them for this?
any advice appreciated please.

sorry I forgot to add that I'm a full time carer for my disabled daughter too, so I'm not in a financial position right now to pay for registering my design to secure it!

Yes you are within your rights to charge them.

As the copyright owner you control who uses your work, it is your decision. You can sell it, or license their use, etc.

If you sell them the copyright, they will own it and you will no longer have a claim. So make sure you are happy with what they offer before you go down that route.

I've never sold copyright of a design before and I obviously don't want to sell myself short.
I've searched several sites on the Internet and it's difficult to gauge a fair price.
Any suggestions please.

No idea I'm afraid

As far as I am aware there is no pre-defined rate for such items, it's simply whatever You and the Council agree on.

Ultimately it comes down to 3 things:
1. How much do you value it.
2. How much does the council values it.
3. What value is the logo to you if the council don't buy it.

Sorry - that's not much help, but I don't know what else to say.
