Copyrighting 'likeness'

I run a very small internet web shop selling various items featuring a relatively famous pop musician.

I''m in the U.K obviously, and as far as I was aware, no-one (famous or otherwise) can copyright their own likeness.

Since I created the images, the copyright is mine. Is that correct?

I''ve just received quite a threatening letter from the pop musician''s merchandising companies lawyer, who happens to live in LA, USA. I guess he isn''t familiar with the British law. Does he really have a case?

I agree that this is not a copyright matter, but that does not mean that the merchandising company is wrong to object.

I am concerned that your actions could be seen as passing off or even counterfieting. I would suggest that you take this matter to a solicitor for a proper appraisal.

It does rather sound as though you are trading off the back of the musicians success.
