We're filming a documentary about music in london, and i was wondering how i'd find out who owns the copyright for old clips of gigs etc,

and any pitfalls or obscure legal traps i should be aware of?

To find the copyright owners, your best bet is to contact the publishers of the clips you wish to use, they will certainly know who to contact and may even be able to arrange licensing on the owner's behalf.
